UN Condemns Israel Strike That Killed 6 Journalists in Gaza
The UN Human Rights Office strongly condemned the killing of six Palestinian journalists by Israeli military forces in Gaza. It stated that the attack—targeting a media tent near the Al-Shifa Hospital—constitutes a “grave breach of international humanitarian law”. The Office called on Israel to respect and protect all civilians, including journalists, and demanded immediate, safe and unhindered access to Gaza for all journalists .
The strike occurred on August 10, 2025, and tragically killed five Al Jazeera journalists, including prominent correspondent Anas al-Sharif, along with a sixth freelance journalist, Mohammad al-Khaldi, according to Al Jazeera and Gaza officials .
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) asserted that al-Sharif had led a Hamas militant cell and had orchestrated rocket attacks—allegations based on intelligence and documents they claim were found in Gaza . These accusations have been firmly rejected by Al Jazeera, press freedom groups, and journalists’ associations, all of whom denounced the strike as a targeted assassination and a war crime .
Tragically, this is part of a wider pattern. Since the war’s onset on October 7, 2023, hundreds of journalists have been killed in Gaza. Estimates vary: the UN and advocacy groups report that between 186 and 242 journalists have died, making this one of the deadliest conflicts for media workers
